A project that needs little introduction, Balmain House in Melbourne’s Cremorne, is a study in restraint — a quietly confident home where materiality and craftsmanship speak louder than excess.
Designed by Auhaus with interiors by Golden, this new build demonstrates how a carefully resolved architectural language, paired with a refined and neutral palette, can deliver a home that feels deeply cohesive. In a design landscape often driven by bold gestures, Balmain House instead embraces subtlety — allowing texture, proportion and natural materials to take centre stage.

Zenn contributed a collection of upholstered elements throughout the home, including custom seating, dining chairs, kitchen stools and bespoke furnishings and window treatments. These softer elements sit in gentle contrast to the home’s strong architectural bones and the generous application of natural stone throughout, creating a layered dialogue between structure and softness.

Remarkably, the project was executed in just six weeks while the owners were based overseas in Dubai. Working closely with the clients through a series of Zoom consultations, Zenn carefully refined materials, finishes and textiles to ensure each piece felt fully integrated into the home’s architectural vision rather than simply added.
Layered fabrics and natural textures were introduced to soften the home’s structural elements and elevate the overall atmosphere, bringing warmth and tactility to the restrained palette.
“Collaborating with Zenn as an overseas client was a masterclass in virtual synergy and connection,” says the client and owner of Balmain House.
