In Bed With Zenn – Amy Gerard
Introducing Amy Gerard.
Podcast host, KIIS FM radio host, author, brand ambassador and mum of 3.
We caught up with Amy at her recently renovated home in Sydney and chatted all things style, work-life balance, her new Rosé, and what her night time routine looks like.
You’ve built up quite a community on your IG to now host 2 podcasts and a KIIS FM radio show. How did it all start?
It all started when I first got pregnant with my daughter. I shared photos and talked about my journey into motherhood, but my twist was using humour. While we all love our kids unconditionally, motherhood can hit hard, and laughter helped me through tough times. I created an online community where women could share the highs and lows of pregnancy, having three kids in four years, my missing libido, and the challenges of motherhood. My community really grew during COVID; with extra time, I made funny reels to entertain people during lockdown. This led to a column, a book deal, a podcast, and eventually radio. I never set out to grow a following; it all happened organically, and I work hard to make the most of each opportunity.
Your book - “Strap yourself in” - is a laugh out loud memoir on your parenting with all its failures and triumphs. Give us your best mum hack to date?
Best Mum hack for the period I am in now (2 kids at school and 1 at preschool) would be to get as much as possible done the night before. Pack lunches, pack bags, lay out school uniforms. Have bowls and cereal on the bench ready. The more I can do the night before the less chaotic the morning will be. I mean, it's still an absolute shit show because my kids are allergic to their shoes and brushing their teeth, but having 50% of it accomplished the night before really helps.
Congratulations on the launch of your new wine - At Last Rose. Tell us about how this came about?
The opportunity to create my own wine came through my podcast and I’ve never jumped on an opportunity faster. Wine is my passion. Not because I’m a high functioning alcoholic but because I love what a glass of wine signifies. It’s the bringing together of people, girls lunches, romantic dinners, pairings with delicious food. It’s special occasions and date nights at home. I had a meeting with David from Three Kings Wine who connected me to Ben Riggs from Mr Riggs winery down in McLaren Vale in South Australia and it went from there. I learnt all about the process from start to finish, did a few trips back and forth to SA for tastings wanting to create the perfect well balanced rose, not sweet but not dry either. We then spent a few months working on a name and a label and then bottling started! Anyone who says having children is the best day of their life, should try creating their own wine!!! (only joking). I also have a red coming out next year in March and she’s bold, full bodied and smoother than a buttered seal on a waterslide.
You’ve recently renovated your home (it's stunning!) - how did you find this journey and what's your fave part of the house?
It wasn't as stressful as I expected, maybe because I anticipated the worst. Working with Catherine from The Stables made it easier; she guided me through the process. I knew the styles and colours I wanted for each room, but ensuring everything flowed cohesively was challenging, so her help was invaluable. My favourite part of the house? Honestly, all of it! I love how it flows, especially the kitchen and living room opening to the backyard and pool. My bedroom feels warm and inviting, and knocking down a few walls really opened up the kids' bathroom. Everything feels spacious and grand, and I adore the openness of the whole house.
How would you describe your home style and vibe?
We love to entertain, so we wanted a warm and inviting home for guests. It features understated neutral colours and various textures, allowing me to enhance it with artwork and colour later. The overall vibe is tranquil and cosy, with curved elements adding a soft touch. While aesthetics matter, my favourite part is the natural light and the welcoming atmosphere.
Why the Pillow bed?
As soon as I saw it I fell in love instantly. It's the perfect balance of minimalist and modern but with the soft touch of linen. It looked so comfortable and for someone like myself who does a lot of reading or sitting up in bed ticked so many boxes for me instantly. I knew it would be the perfect bed for my room.
What do you love about bespoke design pieces for your home and why?
I love bespoke pieces in my home because they reflect my style and personality. It took me almost 6 months to find the Pillow Bed and it was a similar love at first sight moment when I saw the stools as well. They add character to the rooms and make my space feel special and personal. Plus the craftsmanship and attention to detail in bespoke items really elevate the overall aesthetic, creating a warm and inviting atmosphere that is both functional and beautiful.
Your room has such a serene sense of calm. Do you have any night-time rituals or have a process to help you achieve a sense of zen?
I always have a hot shower before bed and do my skin care. I try not to look at my phone before falling asleep and will read for half an hour before I sleep. In Summer my favourite thing to do is lie in bed with all the windows and doors to my balcony open and just listen to the cicadas. It reminds me of my childhood growing up here.
What's next for Amy Gerard? Share with us if you can.
In 2025, I plan to pull back a bit! I took on a lot in 2024—great opportunities I couldn't refuse—but I've learned that you can’t do it all at once. I don’t want to work so hard that I miss out on my kids growing up, especially while they still want to spend time with me. This year’s experiences helped me clarify which career paths I want to pursue and which ones may have run their course.
What are you coveting right now?
I am deep in my art hunting era and I am absolutely loving Ash Holmes for art and Tan Arlidge for 3D sculptures. Just need to get hubby on board &/or lie about the cost!
